AMES, Iowa – Have you ever thought about entering a new area of ââbusiness? This is a trend that we are seeing more and more. In Story County, a new program can help you land your dream job, and they’ll even pay you to do it!
If it sounds too good to be true, it isn’t.
The Ames Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Des Moines Area Community College to offer tuition-free courses in select certifications through the Workforce Training Academy.
Ashley Hostetter recently obtained her Basic and Advanced CNA certifications through the program. She now works at a local hospital.
âThis has led me to a better position, and I am now earning more money than before to continue my education and career advancement,â Hostetter said.
Funding for the project comes from the Story County Board of Supervisors. In addition to covering the costs of textbooks and other school expenses, participants actually receive stipends throughout the academy – once when they are halfway through, a second when they finish, and a third when they finish. they get a job in Story County and keep it for 30 days.
The program aims to help resolve staffing issues in the region.

âWe are seeing these shortages in the labor pool. And we also see some who are trying to get back there, or who just don’t have the skills to go back to their careers, âsaid Nikki Fischer, Director of Workforce. Development & Diversity for the Ames Chamber of Commerce.
Hostetter told Local 5 that Workforce Training Academy is exactly what she needs to take a step in the right direction – she is happy in her new job and has been able to spend more time with her son.
âIt has really helped me a lot and I hope other people will benefit from it, you know the funding is there, so go ahead and make a good change in your life,â she said.
The next available courses are intended for manufacturing and production technicians. This program begins to meet on December 13.
