LWV virtual program to explain the housing element of Piedmont



The Piedmont Women’s Voters’ League will present a virtual program at 4 p.m. on Tuesday on understanding the housing element of the city. The program will also be recorded on YouTube for later viewing. The housing element is part of the general city plan and must be updated every eight years. The city has established a housing advisory committee to help guide the process.

Speakers will include Melissa Beach, COO of California YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard); Gloria Bruce of East Bay Housing Organizations; and the planning commissioner of Piedmont, Rani Batra. School district approves pay increase for substitute teachers

The Piedmont Unified School District Board of Directors, at its September 22 meeting, approved a salary increase for its substitute teachers from $ 140 to $ 200 per day to stay in line with many other school districts in East Bay and attract more qualified candidates. Albany Unified pays $ 300 per day; San Leandro Unified pays $ 270 per day; Oakland Unified pays $ 190.58 per day; and Emeryville Unified pays $ 210 per day. In the 2020-21 school year, 13,558 California teachers retired, 1,000 more than the previous year, according to data from the California State Teachers’ Retirement System.

Oaktoberfest returns with Bavarian beer garden

Oaktoberfest 2021 will take place in a different form and capacity than before, with an outdoor dining event at a Bavarian brewery on October 9 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the tree-lined Bienati parking lot right next to the Fruitvale avenue and equipped with tables, music and, of course, a good beer.
