Kerala Spices Board launched quality improvement training program for farmers

To avoid rejection of exports, the Spice board established a quality improvement training program for farmers to help them avoid dangerous chemicals in the production of crops like cardamom. According to sources from the Spices Board, there have been a few cases of rejection in the past, but Board officials frequently tracked issues to help farmers overcome the difficulty.

Quality improvement training programs will be organized on a regular basis to help farmers and improve their knowledge on the use of chemicals in the cultivation of spices.

Meanwhile, the Agricultural University of Kerala (KAU) launched a three-year initiative to experiment with organic cardamom cultivation. According to KAU officials, the initiative has completed a year of operations and the results will be scrutinized in depth.

The local price of cardamom continued to fluctuate, according to a senior scientist at the institution, and the only option for better prices was to dramatically increase exports. He also mentioned that the organic cardamom cultivation project has so far yielded positive results.

Project involving teamwork

The Spices Board, Rubber Board and the Digital University of Kerala recently announced a collaboration to create spatial models of soil nutrients in cardamom plots and an Android-based mobile app for cardamom growers to follow recommendations from ‘site-specific and needs-based fertilizers.

The initiative was launched by the Indian Cardamom Research Institute, Myladumpara, the research arm of the Spices Board, in collaboration with the Rubber Research Institute of India, the Rubber Board and the Geospatial Analysis Division of the Digital University.

According to the Spices Board forecast for 2020-21, the harvest would cover approximately 69,000 hectares in the nation, ceding 22,500 tons. Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu produce the majority of the country’s small cardamom. Kerala accounts for most of the production. The culture is cultivated on approximately 50,000 hectares as it is, with an average annual yield of approximately 20,000 tons. The majority of cardamom production in the state comes from small farms.
