AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – For veterans who can’t celebrate in a large group due to COVID-19, students at Holy Cross Academy have made a video to support them virtually.
The academy hosts its annual concert and breakfast for veterans living at the Thomas Creek Veterans Home.
However, the school was unable to hold its ceremony in person this year due to COVID-19.
“We always wanted to honor our veterans and let them know we are thinking of them, so we set up our program to make it available online,” said Vicki Mueller, program director and program organizer at Holy Cross. Academy.
The students worked on their program for a month performing songs, spoken words, and reading reflections on what veterans sacrificed for our freedom.
Mueller says the program benefits everyone who participates in it.
“My nephew did two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan,” Mueller said. “It wasn’t until he was deployed that I realized how much it affected even families and that we needed something to honor those people. “
For Isabel Britten, an 8th grader, it’s for her uncle who was deployed to Japan.
“I mean it’s really hard for a veteran’s families and I don’t think people don’t realize that sometimes because we really couldn’t see him for a very long time, so it’s difficult, but definitely a good choice on her part. “said Britten, a student at Holy Cross Academy.
The video is 40 minutes long and the school will be handing out program booklets and plaques to veterans on Monday.
