Dogs are known to be our best friends, and it’s one of the most entertaining and happy times to have a dog with us. The domestication of dogs goes back quite a long time. It has long been used as a watchdog and as a guide. Dogs became associated with humans and are said to have become sensitive to human speech and communication. They have developed a good ability to understand human language, to adapt to the human way of life and to be part of their life. If you have a dog at home, it is necessary to train him to adapt to the lifestyle, to familiarize him with the environment and to be healthy.

Dog training

Dog training deals with the use of everyday scenarios and circumstances to shape and develop dog behavior. Dog training can be given to companion dogs to enable them to experience day-to-day life with humans or given to dogs who help with a particular activity or task. While training dogs to help them perform a particular task or activities dates back to the earliest times of the Romans, the training of dogs for domestication has grown in importance in recent decades.

Types of dog training methods

Dogs are intelligent creatures and tend to learn and adapt quickly to situations. But training dogs for domestication can help achieve this much faster. Dogs primarily learn and develop their behavior based on different surrounding and environmental stimuli. Dogs can modify their behavior based on awareness and the consequences of their behavior. Dog training procedures are of different types depending on the type of training required for the dog. However, the main basis of a successful training procedure should include good communication with dogs, understanding their behavior and reactions, and should be able to incorporate reinforcement at the right time.

The training procedure can be broadly categorized as:

  • Individualized training – To deal with urgent problems like aggressiveness, fear, etc.,
  • Classroom training – Where dogs are allowed to socialize with other dogs to become more independent and improve their emotional well-being, and
  • Specific training – given to dogs used for guarding, breeding, for competitions, assistance, hunting, detection and sniffer dogs.

Some of the commonly known training procedures include:

  • Relationship-based training
  • Koehler method
  • Model-rival training
  • Domination-based training
  • Clicker training
  • Motivational training
  • Balanced training
  • Electronic training

Even though dogs are loyal and obedient, dog training is a basic need and training should be done as soon as possible. Some of the tips to keep in mind are:

  • Provide the dog with an obedience training program.
  • Make training more fun by using games and physical activities.
  • Give positive reinforcement to develop a better connection between dog and trainer.
  • Make sure you provide a training program and give them full training.
