Can a debate champion improve your conversations? A live virtual program from Intelligence Squared US, June 8

From abortion to gun control, it seems like everyday headlines are injecting a new set of issues that divide the national blood. It may seem that any attempt to have a civil discussion about them with someone on the other side will lead to shouting and bad feelings. Can the strategies of a debate champion help you improve those controversial conversations? Is there a better way to engage so people will listen to you? To actively listen to someone who disagrees and respond in good faith? To discuss burning issues with your friends and family without it turning into a shouting match?

Next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. ET, the American debate series Intelligence Squared US is hosting a live virtual conversation with Bo Seo. Considered one of the most recognized figures in the global debating community, Seo has won both the World School Debating Championship and the World College Debating Championship and is the author of the new book Good Arguments: How Debating Teaches Us to Listen and Be Heard. Seo will explain not only how he prevails in formal debates, but how his winning strategies can help the average person debate in the more informal sense of the word, discussing issues with people who disagree in a meaningful way. open and helpful and maybe – just maybe – actually change someone’s mind.

The “Debate Like a World Champion” event will be recorded virtually live on Wednesday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m. ET before airing the following week via public radio and the Intelligence Squared US podcast. Bo Seo is one of the most recognized figures in the global debate community. A two-time world champion debater and former coach of the Australian National Debating Team and the Harvard College Debating Union, Bo has written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, CNN and many other publications. He is currently a Juris Doctor candidate at Harvard Law School and is the author of a new book called “Good Arguments”.
